To my dear friends at the Scotts Valley Rotary:

This letter is to let you know that I am reluctantly giving up my active role in Rotary.

Just as increasing physical debilities led me to cut back on my political activities a decade ago, my continuing decline from a state est robustness is unabated.  Simple, everyday activities have become sometimes a painful labor.

I do not make this decision lightly.  Outside of my family, nothing has been as important to me as Rotary, and especially the Scotts Valley Rotary Club.  The fellowship, the feeling of being a useful part of the greater society, the relief that comes from knowing we are helping those in distress - these are gifts to life I do not easily surrender.

I have adopted the moral imperatives of Rotary as my personal moral code.  It is clear to me that if there were 1.2 billion Rotararians (instead of 1.2 million) the world could not be quite such a contentious mess.

Sincerely,

Tom MacLaren
