I am saddened to report that the numbers for polio for last year have been restated and ended up at 1,294. The disappointing part of the report was that two countries/area’s were the problem. The four endemic countries, except Pakistan, showed great progress, however, the two countries that had been polio-free for ten years showed enormous growth.  Tajikistani had 458 cases but none since July 4, 2010. The DR of the Congo and The Congo had 495 cases.  Those 953 cases significantly affected the total, so we are winning the war, but we lost a few battles.

This year only 55 cases have been reported, of which only 18 from the four endemic countries.  So progress is being made, and we are helping.
