Where we’ve been and where we’re going:

First, I want to thank each one of you for being in the Rotary Club of Scotts Valley and for contributing your precious time and energy to the many projects and events that make being a member so rewarding and that raise the funds for the work that we do.

So far this year we have already served the community by:

1.       serving watermelon at the City Fourth of July celebration,

2.       serving refreshments at the Arts and Wine Festival

3.       serving our young people of the Interact Club of SVHS,

4.       and by sponsoring the Teacher’s Appreciation Breakfast at SVHS (Penny Weaver, the new SVUSD Superintendant of Schools, presided and gave us a big compliment that was reported on in the “Scotts Valley Patch” online Newspaper).

But these are just the beginning to a year that is being dedicated to community service and to our young people, especially those in need of support.

Upcoming events are:

1.       e-waste collection at the SV Fire Department this coming Saturday, the 10th beginning at 8AM through about noon (as the need shows itself). Running in parallel is the Scotts Valley Educational Foundation’s (SVEF) Community day to raise money for our schools.

2.      On Sunday, September 25th, is the Music At The Park event where most of the service clubs of Scotts Valley take their turn to raise money for SVEF and for our own club. We will be serving linguica sausage on sourdough, hot with condiments and potato salad. Dennis Culp is spearheading this event and will need all the help you can offer for this upcoming wonderful day of service for the Scotts Valley Community.

3.       Then comes the “big one” on October 8th at Malone’s: OKTOBERFEST. Rob Slawinski and Don Ditlevsen, together with Patrizia Materassi, Jack Marden and others are working to put together a fun and GREEN event. We need all hands on deck for this event as it is one that the community has come to appreciate over the years. Your contribution of time and, if you can, the purchasing a corporate table, will help us to serve Scotts Valley in so many ways in the future.

4.      Sheryl and Karen are diligently collecting for the Rotary Foundation with our goal of “Every Rotarian, Every Year.” So far we are off to a fast start. Please donate whatever you can to this fund that helps us serve the “poorest of the poor” every year.

5.      Dennis Culp and his family is hosting our Rotary exchange student, Luchia Macchi, from Argentina, who is attending Scotts Valley High School as a senior.

6.      The process for a new Scotts Valley Rotary 5-year strategic plan is in process too.

7.      Judge Denine Guy, Junevile court Judge, is coming later in October to tell us about children at risk.

8.      The Interact Clubs are working together and with us to do more joint service projects…and are they ever busy!

9.      Georgie is working hard on a new, two-year Guatemala project in cooperation with other Rotary Clubs in our area.

These are but a sampling of what is ahead of us, including the usual unknowns that I will share with you as soon as they become known! More importantly, thank you very much for all that you do for the Scotts Valley Rotary and the communities that you live in.
